Description

12 Commercial Street and Scarfataing is an early 19th-century, two-storey house with a concealed basement, featuring a symmetrical three-bay design and a gabled two-storey wing called Scarfataing that projects to the north at the west end. The south elevation and west gable are cement-rendered and lined, while the east gable and north (rear) elevation are harl-pointed, with droved ashlar dressings and margined windows.

On the south elevation facing Commercial Street, the entrance door is centrally located on the principal floor, accessed by stone steps. It features a six-panel timber door with a two-pane fanlight above, flanked by windows and a small basement window in the bay to the right. The first floor has regular fenestration, and the ground floor has a curved corner to the right, which is corbelled out to a square shape above, with a buttress at the left corner. The end elevation to Scarfataing is cement-rendered and lined, recessed at the left.

The west gable has a flush-panelled door with a two-pane glazed upper section on the right side. The north (rear) elevation consists of three bays, with a narrow window centered on the first floor. There is a gabled and slated cement-rendered rubble wing that advances to the right, featuring modern openings and glazing.

The windows throughout are timber sash and case, with 12 panes on the principal floor and 4 panes on the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are stugged and droved sandstone stacks capped with circular cans, along with ashlar skew copes.

Additionally, there is a coursed rubble sea wall with a high random rubble wall above, which bounds the north side of the garden.
