Description
The Sea Door, including Murray and Macbeath's Lodberry, is an 18th-century building with later alterations located at 14 Commercial Street in Lerwick. It is a single-storey and attic structure over a concealed basement, featuring a four-bay asymmetrical design. A single-storey and attic wing projects to the north at the west, creating an L-plan layout. The walls are constructed of random rubble with polished and droved ashlar dressings.
The south elevation facing Commercial Street is asymmetrical, with the entrance door and flanking windows grouped to the left of centre, and an additional window in a broad bay to the outer right. The entrance features a vertically-boarded timber door topped by a plate glass fanlight.
The north elevation at the rear has two bays, with a single window in the left bay and a gabled wing advanced in the right bay. Windows are centered in the gable on each floor, with a square two-pane fixed-light window at the basement level.
Both the east and west gables have a single window to the right at the first floor. The building features timber sash and case windows, with most openings having four panes and a nine-pane window on the left of the rear elevation. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate and includes cast-iron gutters and downpipes. There are rubble stacks on the east and west gables, and a wallhead stack on the east elevation of the wing, all topped with circular cans. The skew copes are cement-rendered.
Additionally, there are random rubble walls at Murray's Lodberry to the east of the wing and at MacBeath's Lodberry to the west of the wing.
