Description

80-82 Commercial Street in Lerwick is a two-storey and attic building with a concealed basement, designed by Alexander Campbell between 1905 and 1906. This symmetrical Scots Baronial tenement features a square double-pile plan and is constructed with stugged squared and snecked sandstone on the main elevations, complemented by stugged and droved dressings and details. The side elevations are made of harl-pointed rubble with stugged and droved ashlar dressings. The windows have projecting cills.

The west elevation facing Commercial Street has a cement-rendered, lined, and painted shopfront on the principal floor. This shopfront includes a modern common stair door at the center, flanked by central panelled and glazed doors with three-pane uppers and two-pane fanlights, supported by cast-iron columns, stall-risers, and flanking windows. Stop-chamfered piers frame the shopfront, which is topped with a corniced frieze. The first floor features three-light canted bays with stone roofs, while the second floor has a crowstepped nepus gable with a segmental-arched window breaking the eaves at the center. Dormers with crowstepped and ball-finialled stone dormerheads break the eaves in the flanking bays.

The side elevations are irregularly fenestrated, with a six-panel door and a two-pane fanlight centered on the north elevation.

The east elevation facing the Esplanade is symmetrical, featuring plate glass fixed-lights at the basement, paired in the center bay, with two-leaf vertically-boarded timber doors on either side and fixed-lights flanking to the outer left and right. The principal floor has bipartite windows in each bay, with the center window slightly offset to the left. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, and a central gable with flanking dormers matches the west elevation.

Some plate glass and four-pane timber sash and case windows remain. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate and features stugged sandstone stacks with octagonal cans.
