Description
57-63 Commercial Street in Lerwick is a late 19th-century, two-storey and attic tenement designed in an asymmetrical Scots Baronial style. The building features a chamfered corner bay to the north, with a two-bay elevation angled to the east (left) and a single bay elevation angled to the west (right). There is an additional two-storey, three-bay tenement attached to the south, creating an L-shaped plan. The exterior is constructed of stugged sandstone ashlar walls, complemented by polished and droved ashlar dressings and details, while the rear elevations are made of rubble and have been modernized and harled on the south gable.
On the Commercial Street elevation, the central chamfered corner bay includes a margined and corniced door at ground level, with a bowed oriel above that features a single window corbelled out. To the left, the two-bay elevation has margined segmental-arched openings at ground level; the left arch contains a six-panel, two-leaf timber door with a three-pane fanlight to the left of a central ashlar column, while a modern window is located above stone infill to the right. The right arch has a two-pane fixed-light window above stone infill and a multi-pane window in the arch-head. The first floor has regular margined fenestration. To the right of the corner, there is a single bay elevation with a segmental-arched window at ground level that matches the one to the left of the corner. The three-bay symmetrical elevation to the right features an eight-panel, two-leaf timber door at ground level in the central bay, flanked by plate glass fixed-light shop windows, with regular modern glazed fenestration on the first floor.
The building has timber sash and case windows, with first-floor windows featuring plate glass lower sashes and nine-pane upper sashes. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate, with a fishscale slated conical roof over the corner bay and a lead-clad dormer that has a semicircular stone dormerhead and a six-pane timber sash and case window. Additionally, there are slate-hung timber box dormers with 16-pane timber sash and case windows over each bay in the flanking elevations. The building is topped with stugged sandstone stacks that are corniced and have circular cans.
