Description
The Fountain in Cornmill Square, Galashiels, was designed by Robert S. Lorimer and built between 1912 and 1913. It is located in the town centre and features a fountain that is set around a section of the mill lade. The fountain is situated within a large raised oval enclosure, which has an ashlar retaining wall and sweeping ashlar steps. The fountain itself is shaped like an elongated figure of eight, with a parapet at the northern end and a heavy squat balustrade at the southern end. At the northern end, there is a rusticated polygonal pillar topped with dolphins that support an Ionic column with their tails. The southern end of the fountain is decorated with a pair of nymphs riding on dolphins. Additionally, there are cast iron lamps surrounding the outer enclosure.
