Description

42 Bank Street is a former Liberal Club built in the later 19th century, with mid and later 20th century additions at the rear extending to Overhaugh Street. The building is two stories tall, with a three-story section at the back, and features a rectangular plan with four bays and plain classical details. It is now used for retail on the ground floor, while the upper floors and rear have been converted into a nightclub since 2005.

The principal southwest elevation is constructed of stugged coursed blonde sandstone ashlar, while the side lane is finished with whinstone rubble and stugged red sandstone margins. There are brick sections on the sides and roof, with a corbelled corner that has stepped chamfered arises leading to the pend. Notable architectural features include a first-floor band course, an eaves band course, and a corniced three-bay shop front on the left with shouldered arched openings. To the right, there is an arched window that was formerly a door, and lugged architraved windows on the first floor.

The windows consist of four-pane timber sash and case designs, while the ground floor shop front has plate glass and half-glazed timber double doors with a shouldered penlight. The roofs are pitched slate with a large flat lead section at the rear, complemented by stone skews, beaked skew-putts, and a corniced stone stack. There is a conical central ridge ventilator and multiple conical ventilators at the rear.

Inside, the ground floor has undergone 20th century alterations to create an open-plan shop interior, with no access to the upper floor. The nightclub in the later 20th century was extensively remodeled in the flat-roofed section that connects to Overhaugh Street. The first floor is not currently open to the public as of 2006 and features a four-bay open plan space, with a turned timber stair leading to a timber panelled room on the second floor that formerly housed cast-iron public baths, along with an access door to the flat roof.
