Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 35 Bank Street, is a classical bank building designed by Dick Peddie, Todd and Jamieson in 1939 and built in 1946. It features a symmetrical U-plan layout with two storeys and seven bays arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration. The central section is advanced and has stone pilasters with slender granite Corinthian columns framing the three central bays. The entrance is highlighted by a carved stone pedimented crest, and the building has prominent smooth ashlar rusticated quoins. The ground floor has tall quadripartite windows in the outer bays, while the first floor features architraved openings with projecting stone cills.

The exterior is finished in smooth sandstone ashlar with diagonally droved margins, and the rear is rendered with smooth surrounds. A black marble base course rises to form a plinth at the central bays and is recessed for vertically aligned glazing in the outer bays. There are wide band courses and string courses at the first floor, along with a projecting moulded eaves course. The windows are architraved with projecting stone cills.

Flanking the entrance are large multi-pane hardwood casements, with fixed plate glazing in the outer bays. The upper floors and rear have 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the lower rear windows have security bars. An out-of-character 20th-century aluminium glazed door is also present. The roof is slated and has a lead piended platform design, with a moulded lead wallhead and small rendered end stacks at the rear outer bays. A metal escape stair is located at the rear, and the building has cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, there have been 20th-century alterations to create a modern commercial bank interior, although the upper floors have not been seen.
