1 Rotten Row, Lauder

1 Rotten Row in Lauder is an early 19th-century end of terrace cottage that was altered in the late 19th century when an attic storey was added. The building is single storey with an attic and features three bays, along with a single storey outbuilding, which may have been a former cottage, attached to the west. The main structure is built of whinstone rubble, while the outbuilding is harled.

On the south elevation, there is an entrance with an ashlar architrave and a flat consoled hood located to the right of centre. The entrance includes a panelled timber door with a rectangular fanlight above it, and there is a cast iron footscraper to the left. Flanking windows are present, with the left window possibly having originally served as an entrance to a separate cottage. Above these windows, there are gabled slated dormers. The single storey outbuilding is attached to the left of the main building, with an entrance on the right.

The east elevation adjoins No 3 the Row. The cottage features 4-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate roof. There are two flanking ridge stacks with band courses; the western stack is harled, while the eastern stack is made of rubble with a band course and round cans, situated above the projecting inglenook of the adjacent cottage.

The interior was not inspected in 1998.
