Description
3 Rotten Row in Lauder is an 18th-century terraced cottage that incorporates earlier fabric and was altered in the late 19th century when an attic storey was added. The cottage is single storey with an attic and has three bays, retaining the remains of an inglenook fireplace. Its exterior is harled, with ashlar architraves around the openings on the principal (south) elevation and projecting sills on the windows.
On the south elevation, the entrance features a boarded timber door with a glazed panel located to the right of center. There are flanking windows with gabled dormers that have rendered sides above. To the left, a short single-storey section of a coped wall, which is the exterior of the inglenook, extends out.
The north elevation has an entrance with a boarded timber door to the right and a small window to the left. The east elevation adjoins No 7 The Row, while the west elevation adjoins No 3 The Row.
The principal (south) elevation has 4-pane horned timber sash and case windows. The slate roof includes a single rooflight on each pitch, with flanking ridge stacks; the stack to the west, above the inglenook, is made of rubble with a band course and round cans, while the stack to the east is harled and coped.
Inside, the remains of the inglenook fireplace are found in the front room to the left of the entrance. A part of the smoke hood beam or chimney bar is visible, along with a small remaining section of the inglenook set back behind it and a small storage recess on the left side. There is also a cupboard set into the inglenook recess to the right of the fireplace. The kitchen features an early beamed ceiling and a simple rubble fireplace, although the flue has been partially replaced in brick.
