Description
Nos 1, 2, and 3 Greenwells Cottages in Eildon are early 19th century houses that have undergone some later alterations. The buildings are two stories high and consist of three bays, featuring piended dormers that break the eaves. They have been subdivided, with a slightly lower wing to the west that forms an additional dwelling. The cottages are constructed from distinctive orange sandstone rubble, accented with red sandstone ashlar dressings, and have raised stone cills.
A classical stone entrance porch is prominent, supported by squared and fluted columns and topped with a moulded entablature. There are two timber doors flanked by stone mullioned bipartite windows. Above, the windows at the breaking eaves are piended, with a bipartite window in the center. The west wing displays irregular fenestration.
The cottages predominantly feature 8- and 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and the buildings have coped skews with moulded skewputts, coped end stacks, clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
