Description
The Saw Mill at Burnfoot Bowden is a water-powered sawmill built in the first half of the 19th century. It is constructed from rubble and has a rectangular shape with an outshot at the southwest corner. The east wall features a segmentally arched entrance, with a loft door positioned above it. The building is topped with a slate roof that includes rooflights.
Inside, there is an overshot waterwheel made of cast iron, measuring 10 feet in diameter, which is housed in the outshot and separated from the main body of the mill by a wall. The main area contains the saw and bench, which includes rollers, and is supported by a collar-beam roof. A long stone lade, measuring 200 yards, directs water from a concrete dam to the mill.
