Description

The Livestock Ring at the Auction Mart in Newton St Boswells was built in 1872. It is a single-storey structure with an octagonal plan, featuring a cast-iron cow ornament weathervane finial. The building is made of rendered brick, with later additions to the north and south sides. There is an animal entrance and exit located to the southeast and a lean-to addition on the southwest wall that contains offices.

Inside, the walls and ceiling are clad in boarded timber, and there is an octagonal louvred cupola. The central ring is surrounded by timber columns and metal fencing. In the southern corner, there are boarded timber walls that form an office and an auctioneer's box. The outer walls have seven stages of tiered timber benching, and the floor within the ring is made of tiled concrete.

The windows feature fixed four-pane glazing in timber frames, and the roof is covered with grey slate. The roof has an irregular arrangement of flush rooflights and louvred triangular vents on alternate facets.
