Description
The Dovecot and Hen House at Foyers Mains Steading is a steading built in 1865. It features a single storey and loft E-plan range that faces northwest, with courtyards that have been infilled, likely slightly later, with covered cattle courts. The building is constructed from harl pointed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The central range has paired segmental-headed cart bays with prominent keystones and a loft door in the middle. At the apex, there is a bellcote (though the bell is missing) that includes a datestone at its base and a cast-iron weathervane. The flanking cattle courts have similar wide entrances, ridge vents, and ridge and end stacks, all topped with a slate roof.
At the rear of the steading, there is an unusual low octagonal structure that appears to have been designed for use as both a henhouse and dovecote. This structure has four-paned windows located below the eaves level and dovecote flight-holes in the gablets. It is also made of rubble and features a facetted slate roof, possibly dating from 1865 as well.
