Description
Riverside Cottage is a house from the mid to later 18th century, with some later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular building with a single-storey lean-to addition set back to the outer left. The front and sides are made of whitewashed rubble sandstone with painted margins, while the rear features random rubble sandstone with heavy pointing and cream sandstone margins.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a part-glazed boarded timber door in the center at ground level, framed by a chamfered door surround. Above this, a single window breaks the eaves in a gabled dormer. The first-floor windows in the flanking bays also break the eaves in gabled dormerheads. The lean-to addition is recessed to the outer left.
The northeast (side) elevation has two bays, with a small single window at ground level in the left bay and single windows at the first floor in both the left and right bays.
The northwest (rear) elevation is irregularly fenestrated. The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing, and there is a small rooflight at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring raised stone skews and replacement rainwater goods. There are brick-built apex stacks on the northeast and southwest sides, topped with circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary wall surrounding the site at the front is made of rubble-coped, harl-pointed rubble, with a brick-faced inner lining in part.
