Description

This building comprises a group of structures, likely originating in the later 18th century, but substantially altered and developed in the mid to later 19th century, with the main range raised in the earlier to mid-20th century. Later additions and alterations have also been made. The complex consists of a rectangular, two-story, seven-bay block (three bays at the first floor) with a four-bay cottage to the left (numbered 1), a three-bay cottage to the right (The Old Smithy House), and a single-story, two-bay smithy adjoined to the outer right, along with various additions at the rear.

The building is primarily constructed of squared and snecked tooled sandstone, with droved sandstone dressings, and harled at the rear. An eaves course, quoins, long and short surrounds to openings, and projecting cills are present. The smithy features harl-pointed rubble construction.

The west (entrance) elevation of No. 1 features a four-bay range to the left, originally comprised of two two-bay properties. It has part-glazed, boarded timber doors flanking the centre at ground level, with sandstone pentice canopies above. Single windows are positioned at ground level in the outer left and right bays, with gabled dormerheads above single windows breaking the eaves. The Old Smithy House to the right has a three-bay range with a part-glazed, boarded timber door centrally located at ground level, flanked by single windows. A gabled dormerhead covers a central window breaking the eaves. The two-bay smithy to the outer right has a two-leaf boarded timber door to the left and a single window to the right.

The north (side) elevation of No. 1 shows a gable end with a ground-floor window to the left and a single window above. A flat-roofed addition is recessed to the outer left. The east (rear) elevation of No. 1 is four bays wide, with a single-story, two-bay, flat-roofed projection with single windows in both bays. A recessed window is located at ground level to the right, and a bipartite window is recessed to the left; a box dormer containing three windows sits above. The Old Smithy House has an east rear elevation of four bays, featuring a single-story, two-bay, flat-roofed projection with a boarded timber door to the left and a window to the right. Recessed ground floor windows are positioned to the right and left, with a box dormer containing three windows above. The smithy has a single window centred at ground level.

The south (side) elevation of the smithy presents a single-story gable end with a small window at ground level to the left, and a taller gable end of The Old Smithy House is set behind. A flat-roofed addition is recessed to the outer right. Twelve-pane timber sash and case windows are found on the front, with more modern windows at the rear, along with rooflights. The main range has a grey slate roof with stone-coped skews, while the smithy has a pantiled roof. Brick-built ridge and apex stacks are present, with cans missing.

The interiors of No. 1 and The Old Smithy House were uninspected in 1999. The smithy’s interior features a floor that is partly cobbled and partly boarded timber, rubble walls, a square-headed forge to the south, an anvil in place, and work benches and tools. Rubble boundary walls partially enclose the site.
