Description

Possibly later 18th century in origin; now mid to later 19th century in form; principal range raised earlier to mid 20th century; later additions and alterations. 2-storey (upper windows breaking eaves), 7-bay (3-bay at 1st floor), rectangular-plan block with 4-bay cottage to left (No 1); 3-bay cottage to right (The Old Smithy House); single storey, 2-bay smithy adjoined to outer right; various additions at rear. Predominantly squared and snecked tooled sandstone; droved sandstone dressings; harled at rear. Eaves course; quoins; long and short surrounds to openings; projecting cills. Harl-pointed rubble to smithy.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION, NO 1: 4-bay range to left (formerly 2 2-bay properties) with part-glazed, boarded timber doors at ground flanking centre; sandstone pentice canopies. Single windows at ground in bays to outer left and right; gabled dormerheads to single windows breaking eaves above. THE OLD SMITHY HOUSE: 3-bay range to right with part-glazed, boarded timber door centred at ground. Single windows flanking entrance at ground; gabled dormerhead to single window breaking eaves at centre. THE SMITHY: 2-bay range to outer right with 2-leaf boarded timber door to left; single window to right.

N (SIDE) ELEVATION, NO 1: gable end with window at ground to left; single window above. Flat-roofed addition recessed to outer left.

E (REAR) ELEVATION, NO 1: 4-bay. Single storey, 2-bay, flat-roofed projection with single windows in both bays. Window recessed at ground to right; bipartite window recessed at ground to left; 3 windows in 6-bay box dormer above. THE OLD SMITHY HOUSE: 4-bay. Single storey, 2-bay, flat-roofed projection with boarded timber door to left; window to right. Windows recessed at ground to right and left; 3 windows in box dormer above. THE SMITHY: single window centred at ground.

S (SIDE) ELEVATION, THE SMITHY: single storey gable end with small window at ground to left. THE OLD SMITHY HOUSE: taller gable end set behind. Flat-roofed addition recessed to outer right.

12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows to front; modern windows at rear; rooflights. Grey slate roof to principal range; stone-coped skews. Brick-built ridge and apex stacks; cans missing. Pantiled roof to smithy; brick-built apex stack.

INTERIORS, NO 1 AND THE OLD SMITHY HOUSE: not seen 1999. THE SMITHY: part cobbled, part boarded timber floor. Rubble walls. Square-headed forge in place to S. Anvil in place. Work benches and tools in place.

BOUNDARY WALLS: rubble walls partially enclosing site.
