Description
Priorwood Cottage, located on Abbey Street in Melrose, is a two-storey building likely designed by Peddie and Kinnear around 1875. The cottage features a gable facing Abbey Street and has a later shop front at ground level. It has straight skews with skewputts and a finial at the apex. On the north side, which faces Prior's Wall, there are three bays, with a forestair leading to the first floor and a later canted bay window on the ground floor to the left. The structure is built of coursed squared rubble with stugged dressings, topped by a slated roof and rectangular corniced brick stacks at the ridge and east gable.
The walls date from the late 18th century and consist of a tall rubble enclosure wall with a flagged coping that steps up the hill along Abbey Street. This wall features large semi-circular scallops that contain notable early 20th century wrought-iron work. At the south end, the wall is breached by two round-headed openings that provide access to public conveniences.
