Description

Greybield is a compact two-storey T-plan Arts and Crafts villa located on Edderston Road in Peebles, designed by the architectural firm Orphost of Orphoot, Whitney and Bryce between 1928 and 1929. It features a conservatory added in 1954 and a small addition by Cameron Associates in 1993. The exterior is finished in cement render with reconstituted stone margins and mullions, and has chamfered arrises.

The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, has four bays. The two right bays are gabled and feature bipartite windows on the ground floor, single windows on the first floor, and an apex stack. The two left bays are single storey, with the roof sloping down from the T's downstroke. There is an eyelid over a splayed doorway in the centre left bay, which has a broad boarded oak door with wrought-iron hinges, and a bipartite window to the left.

On the south elevation, there are three irregularly spaced bays. The ground floor has a door and a bipartite window to the left, leading into the lean-to conservatory, and a canted window to the right with a tripartite window at the front. The first floor features three bipartite windows that break the eaves, each with piended dormerheads. There are also a pair of solar roof panels.

The east elevation has a gable to the left with a projecting buttressed stack flanked by windows on the first floor, and a single window to the right on the ground floor. To the right, there are two bays set back; the inner bay has bipartite windows on both floors, with the first-floor window breaking the eaves and having a piended dormerhead. The outer bay has a sympathetic single storey piend-roofed addition.

The north elevation features a broad gable to the right, with a tripartite window adjacent to a horizontally split door, and another window to the right on the ground floor. There is a quadripartite window on the first floor, and an addition to the left that includes a re-used tripartite window.

The villa is adorned with leaded casement windows, grey-green slate roofing, rendered stacks, and terracotta ridge tiles. It has cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative headers.

Inside, the villa boasts an immaculately detailed timber interior. The living room features plain segmentally arched stone chimneypieces at either end with brick infills. The stairs and landing have a lattice timber balustrade. Bedrooms and the landing include built-in wardrobes and cupboards, with boarded doors (panelled in the landing) fitted with wrought-iron hinges and timber latches, and cavetto architraves. Small stone chimneypieces are present in the bedrooms, with a cornice in the principal bedroom. Lamps in the living room were installed in 1992.
