Description

This is a two-storey and attic villa, built in 1902, showcasing Arts and Crafts detailing and a fine interior. The exterior is painted render over a red brick base forming a cill course. Timber transoms and mullions are prominent features.

The east-facing elevation has a broad, swept-roof porch at the right of centre, with a panelled timber door featuring three coloured-glass toplights and flanking coloured glass. A window is located to the right of the door, with two narrow windows further to the right. A large, four-light transomed stair window stands to the left, and two further transomed windows are positioned at the first floor. A projecting gabled wing extends to the outer left, incorporating a flat-roofed porch extension at ground level and a window to the right. The gablehead also features a window. A swept roof covers a single-story return to the right, with a central narrow window, flanked by two small square bipartites, and a similar single window to the left. A small tripartite eyelid dormer sits above this section.

The west elevation is three bays wide, featuring a seven-part, transomed bay window at ground level, with a door centrally positioned within the middle light. The first floor has two windows over the centre bay, a flat-roofed dormer above, and tripartite windows over the outer bays. A French window opening onto a balcony is located to the left.

The north elevation presents an M-gabled form, with two irregular windows to the left at ground level and a single window to the right at each floor. The south elevation exhibits near-symmetrical fenestration with outer gabled bays.

The windows generally feature small-pane toplights over plate glass, with coloured leaded toplights on the ground floor of the west and north elevations and other multi-pane leaded glazing elsewhere. The stair window uses multi-pane timber glazing. The roof is slate, with cavetto-coped ashlar stacks topped with cans. Deeply overhanging eaves add to the architectural character.

The interior retains an outstanding decorative scheme, including architraved doors and windows, decorative plasterwork, and carved timber fire surrounds. The dining room’s fireplace has a panelled overmantel. Floors are made of Japanese maple. A screen door features coloured glass lights, and the stairhall hosts a plain timber-balustered dog-leg staircase with a box seat. The butler’s pantry retains glass-fronted cupboards, and some original sanitary ware remains.
