Description
Rowanbank, located at 15 Caledonian Road in Peebles, is a pair of symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay semi-detached L-plan houses built in the late 19th century. They are designed with bull-faced squared and snecked cream sandstone featuring polished dressings and stugged margins. The houses exhibit regular fenestration with tabbed margins, stop-chamfered arrises, and segmental-headed windows on the first floor, which break the eaves adorned with gabled dormerheads. The eaves are overhanging and reveal exposed rafters.
On the north entrance elevation, each house has a projecting gabled centre bay with stop-chamfered corners. The doorpiece is roll-moulded and shouldered, topped with arched and crenellated cresting. Above the door, there is a window on the first floor and a blank shield in the gablehead. The flanking bays feature bipartite windows at ground level, with a later large projecting bipartite window added to the left side at Bridgelands.
The end elevations are blank on the Bridgelands side, while Rowanbank has windows on both floors to the left and a window to the right at ground level. The rear elevation of each house includes a projecting gabled outer bay.
The windows throughout are timber sash and case with horns and plate glass, although some at the rear are multi-pane. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are coped stugged apex ashlar stacks with octagonal cans.
The interior was not seen in 1994. The property is enclosed by a rubble whinstone boundary wall with semicircular coping and tapered stop-chamfered ashlar gatepiers, although one pair of gatepiers has been infilled. A modern stone garage is located to the east.
