Description
The Brewery Warehouse at Melrose Abbey is a later 19th century building that features a rectangular block with a central pend, which was formerly part of the north range of an irregular courtyard complex. The structure has two storeys and a loft. The north front showcases a central pend with rounded joints, moulded impost blocks, and a segmental arch that bears the inscription 'Simson and McPherson Ltd Brewers and Maltsters'. The façade is irregularly fenestrated, with five rectangular windows on the ground floor and three square openings on the first floor. There is a shallow two-storey lean-to projection at the west gable, with a rounded south angle. The south elevation includes a restored external stair leading to loading bays on the first and loft floors. The building is constructed of coursed squared rubble, incorporating some reused medieval masonry from the Abbey, with freestone lintels and voussoirs, and it has a piended slated roof.
