Description

The Steading at Greendykes is a building dating from 1832, which incorporates elements from a 17th century structure. It features a symmetrical, quadrangular layout, with only the southwest entrance range and northeast inner range remaining unaltered.

The southwest entrance range is a two-storey, ten-bay cartshed and granary that includes a central vehicular pend flanked by advanced end gables. It is constructed from bull-faced coursed ashlar with contrasting droved dressings. The broad central bay is advanced and features a segmental-arched pend. Above this, there is a dovecot with a triangular panel that has flight holes and ledges on the gable, along with an armorial panel above. The ground floor has five cart arches flanking the central pend, while the granary above has three windows and a hayloft door in the outer bays. Each flanking gable at ground level has a door and window, with a slit opening to the attic.

The northeast inner range is built from squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. It has a central segmental-arched pend in an advanced gable bay that breaks the eaves, topped with a decorative weather vane. The range consists of doors with strip fanlights and alternating windows, although some modern alterations have been made.

On the west side, there is an engine house without a chimney and a subsidiary courtyard, which is now roofed. The original stone piers and cobbles remain in place. The southwest range features boarded doors and windows, while the inner range has sash and case windows. The building is topped with grey slates and has crowstepped gables with finials.
