Description

High Church in Paisley is an 18th-century church designed by architect John White, constructed between 1754 and 1756, with a steeple added in 1770. The church underwent renovation from 1876 to 1877 by architects Rennison and Scott. It features a rectangular plan and is built of ashlar stone with rusticated quoins.

The south elevation showcases a five-stage steeple, which includes a rusticated round-headed surround for the door, a Venetian window with blind sidelights, and a second stage with angle pilasters and a blind round-headed window. The third stage has a clock on each face, flanked by pilasters that support an open pediment. Above this, a corbelled balustrade is set back over the fourth stage, which features Venetian windows with blind sidelights and another corbelled balustrade. The fifth stage is octagonal, with round-headed openings on each side and a facetted spire adorned with roundels. The flanking bays have segmental ground floor windows, and the gallery includes inner oculi and round-headed outer windows.

The north elevation consists of six bays, with a central pilastered and pedimented doorpiece, two doors in the end bays, and windows that match the detailing of the south front. The east and west elevations each have five bays, featuring central segmentally-headed doors and round-headed windows at the ground level and in the galleries. The building is topped with an eaves cornice and a piended slate roof that is platformed at the center.

Inside, the church is galleried on three sides, with panelled fronts supported by cast iron colonettes. The organ is situated under a tower recess framed by an arch and coupled Ionic columns. The interior also boasts a heavily moulded coved ceiling with a large central boss, along with two stained glass windows by Ballantine and Sons of Edinburgh and two earlier 20th-century windows.
