Description

The Atholl Hotel, located at 1 St Leonards Bank in Perth, is a combination of two former villas from the late 18th and late 19th centuries, now connected by a two-storey wing that features a projecting conservatory. There are also several later single-storey extensions at the rear.

The villa on the right, dating from the late 18th century, is a two-storey, three-bay structure built from painted rubble with contrasting raised painted margins. It includes a base course and a cill course, along with a later single-storey extension to the north.

The villa on the left, from the late 19th century, is a two-storey and attic, three-bay building constructed from squared and coursed tooled sandstone, also with painted raised margins and quoins. It features a cill course, central steps leading to a two-leaf timber entrance door with a semi-circular fanlight above, set in a keystoned round-arched doorpiece with a consoled cornice. The ground floor has flanking canted bay windows, while the upper window openings have moulded architraves. There are also a pair of piended canted dormers. This villa has earlier 20th-century two-storey extensions to both the north and south.

The windows of the hotel include predominantly plate glass with horns for No 1 and four-pane timber sash and case windows for No 2. The roof is covered with grey slates and features coped gablehead stacks with some decorative cans.

Inside, as seen in 2009, both houses have experienced some alterations but retain curved staircases with decorative iron balusters and timber handrails. Some decorative cornicing can be found in the public rooms.
