Description
This building, located at 38, 40, and 42 Princes Street in Perth, dates from around 1890 and is a substantial three-storey, nine-bay Classical warehouse block that was formerly used as carriage works. It features a pediment and round-arched openings that create an arcade loggia with shops on the ground floor, making it a prominent structure on Princes Street. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar with moulded dressings, including a base course, a moulded string course between the ground and first floors, and a bracketed eaves cornice.
The central bay is pilastered and pedimented, with a wide elliptical arch at ground level. The first and second floors have tripartite windows, with the first-floor windows being taller, while the flanking bays feature a bipartite window arrangement. The roof is piended.
The upper floors predominantly have non-traditional timber framed glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are broad, ashlar dressed end stacks with moulded coping, clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
