Description

St John The Baptist's Church, located on Princes Street in Perth, was designed by John, William Hardie, and James Murdoch Hay of Liverpool in 1851, with later additions by Andrew Granger Heiton in 1914. This Greek cruciform church features a Mid-Pointed Gothic style and includes a tower with an octagonal stone spire situated at the northwest corner, where the nave and transept meet on a prominent site. The building is constructed of stugged and squared rubble with ashlar dressings, and it has raised in-and-out quoins. The north, east, and west elevations are adorned with large traceried windows that have hoodmoulds.

The tower is characterized by angled buttresses and steeply stepped offsets, along with an engaged octagonal turret at the northeast angle. It features blind arcading beneath the belfry stage, louvred bipartite openings in the belfry, a dogtoothed cornice, and a broached and lucarned spire topped with a cast-iron cruciform finial.

On the west elevation, there is a timber pointed-arch door with a hoodmould that has shield-bearing angels as stops. A later castellated porch is located at the northwest re-entrant angle, and inside, there is a two-leaf timber entrance door on the north side of the nave, featuring pelican and eagle carved stops on the hoodmould. A plain addition is found at the northeast angle, while an octagonal turret is positioned at the southwest corner of the south transept. A glass linking corridor on the ground floor connects to No 32-36 Princes Street.

The church is roofed with grey slate and features stepped skews and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the church boasts an impressive hammerbeamed and collar-braced timber ceiling with moulded corbel detailing. Other interior features include a carved stone pulpit, a chancel arch, an altar with altar railings, a bishop's chair, an eagle lectern, and a timber screen with a vine frieze. The church also houses an organ and a fine collection of stained glass windows in the 14th century style.
