Description
This building, a hostel located at 55 Princes Street in Perth, was designed by James Miller in 1924. It is mainly a two-storey and attic structure, built in a red brick, L-plan style that reflects late Stuart and Neo-Georgian architectural influences. The building is situated in a narrow lane on the west side of Princes Street.
The south elevation, which is the principal façade, features seven bays and includes a central doorway with an architrave and a segmentally pedimented design. There is a moulded timber cornice, and the west wing has three pairs of timber French doors on the ground floor. The windows on the ground floor have voussoired red-brick heads with pale sandstone ashlar keystones, while the first-floor windows have brick cills.
The east elevation has three bays and includes a projecting three-storey corner tower at the northeast angle, which has a chamfered stack and a steeply pitched mansard roof. There is also a three-storey, flat-roofed section at the northwest angle.
The main block features eight flat-roofed dormers, with two additional dormers on the west wing and another eight on the rear (north) elevation, all equipped with multi-pane casement windows. The principal elevations predominantly have timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing, while the irregularly fenestrated rear elevation features predominantly 8-pane glazing, including a large stair window at the center. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a tall brick coped end stack on the west wing, along with cast iron rainwater goods.
