Description

The Nurses Home with Recreation Room, designed by James Miller between 1929 and 1931, is an impressive two-storey and attic building with 15 bays, featuring a T-plan layout and neo-Georgian architectural style. It has a piend and platform roof and includes a single-storey and attic recreation room with transomed windows connected at the rear. The building is situated to the southeast of the hospital in a small, tree-lined garden on elevated ground, overlooking the City of Perth.

The main entrance features a blind portico supported by Ionic pilasters, a consoled canopy, and a dentilled cornice above a two-leaf panelled door with a multi-pane fanlight and flanking corniced windows. The facade displays regular fenestration arranged in vertical brick bands, separated by broad pilasters, and includes small wallhead dormers. The exterior is finished with painted harl and contrasting red brick detailing, complemented by a deep brick base course and eaves cornice. The windows are architraved with brick voussoirs.

The principal elevation faces northeast and has three slightly advanced central bays that form the entrance, with moulded dies projecting above the cornice. The flanking bays and small wallhead dormers feature regular fenestration.

The timber sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern, along with top-hopper windows and multi-pane glazing in the transomed windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the chimneys are coped harled stacks with some cans.

Inside, the building remains largely unaltered, featuring plain cornicing, panelled doors, multi-pane screen doors, and timber fire surrounds. The vestibules and washrooms have tiled floors. The recreation room retains plain cornicing, a panelled timber dado, a boarded floor, and a timber fire surround with a marble inset and cast iron grate.

The boundary walls consist of semicircular-coped brick with square-section brick gatepiers and ironwork gates.
