Description

The General Railway Station on Leonard Street in Perth was designed by Sir William Tite in 1848, with later additions by Blyth & Westland in 1884 and WA Paterson in 1893. This expansive station complex features a Tudor-Gothic style, highlighted by a multi-bay former ticket office block from 1848, which includes an off-centre, five-stage crenellated octagonal tower. To the east, there are platforms added in 1884, and a flat-roofed single-storey linking extension was added in 1968 to serve as a ticket office. The building is constructed from coursed grey and pink sandstone, accented with contrasting cream ashlar sandstone margins. The platforms are supported by polygonal cast-iron columns, and there are decorative stairways and bridges featuring trellis iron balustrades, Tudor-arched detailing on the balusters, and iron handrails. The platform canopies include some decorative timber valances.

The main building, located to the west, is asymmetrical and consists of a two-storey, long, multi-gabled block. It has a base course, eaves cornice, and blocking course, with some hoodmoulds present. The windows are double-chamfered, featuring two and three lights with stone mullions and transoms, while the doorways are Tudor-arched. There are panelled timber leaf doors, advanced timber bay windows, and one timber oriel window. The crenellated tower is buttressed and has pointed-arch windows topped with a pyramidal slate roof. The building predominantly has timber sash and case windows, with a slate roof over the former office building and saw tooth glass roofs over the platforms.

Inside, the former office and waiting rooms remain largely intact. One large ground floor room features a decorative coffered ceiling, timber flooring, Corinthian columns, and a decoratively carved timber fire surround and panelling. Other rooms have simple cornicing and panelled timber doors, along with some fire surrounds.

To the northeast, there is a large former carriage shed that includes cast-iron columns and trellis beams. It has a saw tooth corrugated iron roof with partially clad sides that are open to the ground, along with some modern additions.

To the north, the station is flanked by a pair of narrow square-plan cast iron capped gatepiers, which are accompanied by a pair of larger crenellated stone gatepiers.
