Description
3-5 South End in Stromness is a house dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. It is a two-storey and attic building with a three-bay rectangular plan and crowstepped gables. The left side has been converted into a shop, and there is a rubble and timber forestair leading to No 5. The exterior features harl-pointed random rubble with cement margins around the openings and an eaves course.
On the north elevation, there is a two-leaf boarded door at the ground level in the central bay, with a part-glazed timber panelled door above it on the first floor. Each floor has a window in the bay to the right. On the left side, there is a part-glazed door with a window flanking it at ground level, and a window above on the first floor.
The east side elevation includes a lean-to garage addition at ground level, an attic window to the right of the gable, and a gablehead stack above. The building has 12-pane and 4-pane timber sash and case windows, with a rooflight located in the centre of the north pitch. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a stone ridge, along with cement-rendered and lined, corniced gablehead stacks on both the east and west sides. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC.
Inside, No 3 has been converted into a shop and includes fitted timber shelves. The interior of No 5 has not been seen since 1997. There is a low boundary wall along the north elevation, which is cement-rendered and lined with a coping.
