Description

The Girnel House, located at 22 Harbour Street in Kirkwall, is an 18th-century building that incorporates earlier elements. It is a two-storey and attic structure with a long rectangular plan and six bays, featuring an asymmetrical design. The entrance to the first floor is accessed via a double forestair, which is offset to the left of the center. The exterior is constructed of random rubble with harled sides and rear.

On the principal (north) elevation, there is a boarded door offset to the left at ground level. The double forestair leads to a deep-set boarded door at the first floor, located in the penultimate left bay, with an attic window situated above it. The remaining bays have regular fenestration on each floor.

The west (side) elevation includes a forestair leading to a boarded door at the first floor, positioned to the right of center, with an attic window above and a gablehead stack.

The south (rear) elevation is partially obscured but features regular fenestration at the first floor and attic, along with a steel stair that leads to a pitched-roofed loft entrance, which is offset to the left of center.

The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a traditional stone slated easing course, stone skews, and predominantly uPVC rainwater goods. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
