Description
The Orkney Wireless Museum, located at 1 Junction Road in Kirkwall, was built in 1866 with a later addition. This single-storey, three-bay building has a T-shaped plan and features a symmetrical design with a piended roof. The entrance is prominent, with a pedimented projection and tall chimney stacks. The exterior is constructed from squared and coursed rubble, accented with yellow sandstone ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are made of roughly coursed rubble. The building includes a base course and a corniced eaves course, with long and short margins around the openings and long and short quoins at the corners.
On the west elevation, the advanced entrance projection has a window in the center, with a date panel above it in the block-finialled pediment. A modern timber door is located to the right. There is a window in each bay flanking the entrance, and a modern part-glazed door with a window is found in the flat-roofed addition to the outer left. The central window is a fixed six-pane, timber-framed design, while the flanking windows are twelve-pane timber sash and case. The addition features an aluminium-framed window. The roof is covered with purple slate and has red clay ridge tiles, with stone skews on the pediment and tall, dressed and corniced wallhead stacks on the north and south sides. The building has uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
