Description
Orkadale, located at 9 Albert Square in Kirkwall, is an 18th-century town house that has undergone later alterations. This two-storey and attic building features a symmetrical, rectangular plan with three bays and a crowstep gable. The central bay is full-height and has a pitched roof, while the northeast elevation faces the street and includes a small rectangular garden to the northwest. The exterior is harled.
On the northwest (principal) elevation, there is a window on each floor of the advanced central bay, along with a modern timber panelled door featuring a letterbox fanlight located in the left return at ground level. Each flanking bay also has a window on each floor.
The northeast (side) elevation has a window on each floor, including the attic, which is offset to the right of centre. A gablehead stack is positioned above.
The windows are two-pane timber sash and case, and there are three small rooflights evenly spaced on the northwest pitch. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a red clay ridge, with stone skews at the porch and harled corniced stacks on the northeast and southwest. The building features predominantly cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
The boundary walls consist of a low, cement-rendered wall with a ridged ashlar coping, enclosing the rectangular garden to the northwest, along with replacement decorative wrought-iron railings.
