Description
9 Alfred Street in Stromness is an earlier 19th-century detached house that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan building, originally designed as a two-bay structure, featuring a crow-stepped gable facing the street and a flat-roofed garage set back to the left. The exterior is finished in cement render with a lined texture and includes an eaves course.
On the north elevation, which is the principal front, there is a modern part-glazed timber panelled door located in the bay to the right of centre, with a window above it on the first floor. To the left, there is another window set close to the first floor, and a window at each floor in the outer left bay.
The west elevation, which faces the street, is irregular with two bays. It has a window in the ground floor of the left bay and a small window in the gable shoulder above. The garage, which has a modern tilting door, is set back to the outer left, and there is a timber slatted parapet above the wallhead. The right bay features a window on each floor. A centrally placed gablehead stack is located above.
The windows are modern timber sash and case types, with 12 panes in the main windows and 4 panes in the gablehead window. There are also three evenly spaced rooflights. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a stone ridge and coped cement ashlar gablehead stacks, along with moulded cans and uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997. Additionally, there is a gatepier made of stop-chamfered square-plan cement ashlar, located to the north, which defines the carport. It features a spherical finial raised on a pyramidal cap.
