5 East Road, Kirkwall

5 East Road in Kirkwall is an earlier 19th-century house that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular building with a symmetrical design. To the right, there is a modern, flat-roofed, single-storey garage with a pedestrian entrance, which is part of a similarly dated development on the south side of East Road. The exterior is harled with an eaves course, and the first-floor windows are positioned close to the eaves, featuring cement cills.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a deep-set timber-panelled door with a letterbox fanlight at the ground level in the central bay, with a window above it on the first floor. Each bay has a window on both floors, and there are modern boarded doors for the pedestrian entrance and the garage on the outer right.

The east and west side elevations feature the garage at ground level, with the garage for Number 7 abutting the east elevation. The first floor is blank, and there is a gablehead stack above. The first-floor windows are 12-pane timber sash and case types with external double-glazing, while the ground floor has uPVC multi-pane windows with top-hung upper lights. Small rooflights are present on the north pitch. The traditional graded stone tiled roof has a stone ridge and cornice harled gablehead stacks, with uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1998. The boundary walls and railings consist of low harled walls with a stone cope on the north elevation, along with decorative cast-iron railings and a similar central gate.
