Description
20 St Catherine's Place in Kirkwall is a pair of houses built around 1805, with some later alterations and additions. The buildings are two-storey, except for Number 20, which has a single storey and attic. They have a rectangular plan and feature crowstepped gables, with the gabled elevation facing the street to the west and extending east. Number 19 includes a later centred castellated entrance porch, while Number 20 has a later pitch-roofed entrance porch and a single-storey lean-to addition to the east. Attic windows on Number 20 break the eaves.
On the south (principal) elevation, Number 19 has a boarded door with a window on either side of the entrance porch, and a window in the left return. Each bay has a window on both floors. Number 20 features a window in the entrance porch, a modern uPVC door in the left return, and a window in the right return. Each bay has an enlarged ground window with a box dormer above. There is a boarded door leading to the lean-to addition on the outer right.
On the north (rear) elevation, Number 19 has a small centred window on each floor, while Number 20 has a centred window at ground level with a box dormer above.
The west elevation facing St Catherine's Place has a window at ground level in the left bay and a window at the first floor in the right bay, with a gablehead stack above. The east elevation features a horizontally disposed, 5-pane window in the addition at ground level and a gablehead stack above a blank elevation.
Number 19 has traditional 2-pane timber sash and case windows, while Number 20 has replacement uPVC windows. The roof of Number 19 is traditionally covered with graded stone tiles, while Number 20 has a grey slate roof. Both buildings have harled walls, corniced ridges, and gablehead stacks, with predominantly uPVC rainwater goods.
The interiors were not seen in 1998. There is also a small single-storey rubble lean-to shed located to the east, featuring boarded doors and a felt roof.
