Description
9 East Road in Kirkwall is an earlier 19th-century house with later alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan, symmetrical house (Number 11) that is adjacent to a two-storey, two-bay house (Number 9) on ground that slopes to the west, creating a small terrace. There is a pedestrian gate to the left. The exterior is harled with cement dressings, and harl-pointed rubble is visible on the east side. The building features an eaves course and plain margins around the openings of Number 11.
On the north (principal) elevation, Number 11 has a timber-panelled door with a letterbox fanlight in the central bay at ground level, with a window above on the first floor. Each bay has a window on both floors. There is a boarded pedestrian gate providing access to the rear on the outer left, and a high harled wall adjoins the screen wall of Number 13, which is listed separately. Number 9 features a timber-panelled door with a two-pane fanlight in the left bay at ground level, with a window above on the first floor and a window in the right bay on both floors.
The east and west side elevations are blank with gablehead stacks. Number 11 has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while Number 9 has two-over-single-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a stone ridge, with harled, corniced gablehead stacks on both the east and west sides, as well as a mutual ridge stack. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC. The interior was not seen in 1998.
