Description

This building at 13 East Road in Kirkwall is an earlier 19th-century house that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular house with a near-symmetrical design, situated on a slope that descends to the west. The ground floor features a three-light canted bay window, and there is a swept screen wall with an entrance on the outer right. To the outer left, there is a flat-roofed single-storey garage addition. The exterior is harled and includes an eaves course and plain margins around the windows.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a pilastered and corniced doorpiece at the ground level in the central bay, which contains a modern timber door with a letterbox fanlight above it. A window is located at the first floor above the door. To the left, there is a three-light canted window with a piended canopy on the ground floor, and a window above it at the first floor. The flat-roofed garage is to the outer left, and there is a window in the bay to the right at each floor. The high swept screen wall features a boarded door on the outer right.

The west (side) elevation is blank with a gablehead stack above it. The east (side) elevation has a window set to the right at the first floor, with a gablehead stack above.

The windows are timber sash and case, with two and twelve panes. The roof is covered in grey slate, featuring a stone ridge and stone skews, with harled, corniced multi-flue gablehead stacks. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC.

The interior was not seen in 1998. The boundary walls consist of low harled walls along the north elevation, topped with a stone cope.
