Description

2 Alfred Street in Stromness is a house built around 1790, with later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey building with an attic, featuring a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan, situated on ground that slopes down to the east. The exterior is harled, with painted cement margins around the openings.

On the south (principal) elevation, there is a pilastered and corniced doorpiece in the central bay at ground level, which contains a deep-set replacement timber panelled door with a geometric overdoor light above it. A window is located above this door on the first floor. To the right, there is a window on each floor, with a finialled gablet dormer window above. Similarly, to the left, there is a window on each floor, with a box dormer above.

The west (side) elevation features a two-bay gabled wall, with a window in each bay on both floors and an extended tall gablehead stack above. The wall is coped and has a boarded door set to the left, connecting The Haven to 4 Alfred Street on the right.

The east (side) elevation also has a two-bay gabled wall. A coal-cellar door is located to the left at the basement level, with a window in each bay on the first floor and a small attic window at the gable shoulders, topped by a gablehead stack.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 2- and 4-pane configurations. The roof has been replaced with grey slate, featuring a stone ridge and stone skews, along with a small roof light at the center. The stacks are harled and coped, and the building predominantly uses uPVC rainwater goods, supported by regular cast-iron brackets beneath the gutter.

The interior was not seen in 1997.
