15 Alfred Street, Stromness

15 Alfred Street in Stromness is a mid-19th century pair of houses that have undergone later alterations and additions. They are two stories tall and have a five-bay rectangular plan, positioned on the west side of a small square. The exterior features roughly coursed rubble that has been re-pointed, with cement dressings. The windows have plain margins, and the doorways are round-arched.

On the east elevation, which is the principal side, the bays are arranged in a 3-2 grouping. The three-bay section on the left has Tuscan pilasters on square bases, with a round-arched hood over the central doorway. This doorway contains a deep-set modern part-glazed timber door with a fanlight above it, and there is a window above this door on the first floor. Each bay on this side has a window on both floors. The two-bay section on the right features a plain round-arched doorway with a modern part-glazed door and fanlight to the left, and a window above it on the first floor. There is also a window on each floor in the bay to the right.

The houses have modern two-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, concrete skew stones, and a coped re-pointed rubble ridge stack at the north end. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.

In front of the main doorway on the left are square-plan concrete ashlar gatepiers topped with a flat cope and shallow pyramidal cap. The boundary walls are made of concrete with a ridged cope and feature cast-iron railings.
