Turf Hotel, 32-34 Eglinton Street, Irvine

The Turf Hotel, located at 32-34 Eglinton Street in Irvine, is a former house dating from the late 18th century. It is a two-storey building with three bays, featuring a two-bay single storey and attic addition. The exterior is harled with painted ashlar dressings, including a base course and quoin strips.

The entrance door is off-centre to the left and has a cornice with two-leaf panelled doors. To the right of the door is a small window, while larger windows are found in the outer bays, with regular fenestration on the first floor. The single storey bays to the left include a door on the extreme left and a window to the right, all beneath a steeply pitched roof that has a tall canted, piend-roofed dormer. A framed signboard is located on the north gable.

The building features timber sash and case windows with small-pane glazing patterns, although some lower sashes have plate glass. The main roof is covered with grey slates and has a shallow pitch. A tall, square mutual gable stack with clay cans is present.

Inside, the hotel has been fitted out in the early 20th century, with a bar to the south and a lounge to the north. The bar includes a central vertically-boarded timber bar and timber fireplaces with overmantles on the south and east walls. The lounge features cast-iron fireplaces on the south wall, anaglypta wainscoting and frieze, and a beamed timber ceiling. There is also a timber vestibule with etched glass panels.
