Description

Arran Public Library and Brodick Hall, designed by Sir John James Burnet in 1895, features extensive additions in a compatible style from the late 20th century. This irregular-plan building, combining single and two-storey elements, showcases the Arts and Crafts style. The exterior is finished with harled painted ashlar dressings and a slate roof, although the modern addition uses grey concrete tiles. The windows include painted ashlar cills, mullions, and lintels, with multi-pane designs, plain bargeboards, and a bellcast roof on the main hall.

On the east elevation, there is a canted stair tower that projects to the right, featuring three ground floor windows and three larger upper-level windows with a plain cill panel in the center. The eaves course and facetted roof are notable, along with a door with a moulded doorcase on the right return, which is partially obscured by the addition extending to the far right. To the left, a gable displays a tripartite window at ground level and a tile-hung, canted window on the first floor beneath a jettied gable apex.

The south elevation has a door on the right with a plain panel above and three adjoining tripartite windows to the left on the first floor. A slightly lower block is advanced to the left, featuring a door on the right and two tripartite windows to the left. There is also a door and two windows on the left return gable, with blocked windows on the first floor.

The north elevation is mostly concealed by a late 20th-century addition, which hides the lateral gables and swept roof bay of the original building. Inside, the main hall boasts a collar-braced roof and a horseshoe gallery.
