Description

The former Post Office, now a pharmacy, is located in Invercloy, Brodick, Arran, and was built in 1886, with a slightly later rear block designed in a compatible style. This single-storey and attic building has an irregular plan and serves both as a shop and a domestic space. It is constructed from bull-faced and snecked red rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings, topped by a piended slate roof featuring terracotta ridge tiles and finials, along with cast-iron rainwater goods. The principal elevations have a battered base course, single and bipartite windows, and quoins at the jambs. The windows are framed with 2-pane timber sash and case, and the rear block has bipartite piend-roofed dormers. The building also features deep eaves with boarded soffits and collar brace bargeboards at the gables, as well as a corniced and linked central ridge stack.

On the southeast elevation, the gable is advanced to the center and includes a bipartite window, with a clock set in a round-headed ashlar panel in the roofspace. There is an open porch at the right re-entrant angle supported by a cast-iron column and a decorative griffin-motif bracket, leading to a modern door. To the left, a bay is recessed and contains a bipartite window.

The east elevation has a slightly advanced bay to the left with a bipartite window. The later block is recessed to the right, featuring a tripartite window and a single window, along with a window formed from a blocked door. A dormer is also present. The right return elevation is harled and includes a door and various windows, along with two dormers.

The west elevation shows a block advanced to the right with a door and window, and a projecting bipartite window. The later block is recessed to the left and has various doors and windows, as well as a dormer.

The interior has not been seen. Additionally, there are cast-iron gates and railings leading to the adjoining garden.
