Description
Southwest Cottage is a single-storey, four-bay thatched cottage, likely built in the 19th century, located at the southwest end of a row of three adjoining cottages on Berneray in the Isle of North Uist. The cottage features thick, battered walls made of coursed rubble with rounded corners. There is a later porch added to the southeast front. The windows are small-paned with splayed reveals, and the cottage has end chimney stacks. The roof is covered with marram thatch, which is secured with ropes and stone weights over the inner wallhead, resting on a timber roof structure with a turf underlay.
