Hostel Annexe, Berneray

The Berneray Youth Hostel complex consists of two single-storey, roughly rectangular-plan cottages built from rubble in the Hebridean style, with thatched roofs. These buildings date from the early to mid-19th century and were renovated in the late 20th century. They are located on the eastern side of Berneray, at the northeastern edge of Bays Loch, on a sand and shingle bank that extends southeast from Port Ludaig.

The cottages feature battered rubble walls with squared corners, which are limewashed. The windows are deeply recessed, and both buildings have painted timber ledge and braced doors. Each has a piended roof that appears to be thatched with a mixture of straw and marram grass. The thatch is secured with netting and weighted stones that rest low on the wallhead, leaving part of the wallhead exposed. The ridge is supported by double horizontal hazel spars.

The main hostel building has a front (southeast) elevation that is four bays wide. Its rear (northwest) elevation includes two window openings with six-pane painted timber casement frames and features a square chimneystack on each end wall.

The annexe's front elevation faces southwest and is three bays wide, with the northwest end integrated into the landscape. This elevation has two painted timber ledge and braced front doors and one window, while the rear elevation contains two windows.

The interiors of both the hostel and annexe were last observed in 2017. The internal fabric, layout, and fixtures are all from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, following refurbishment in 1989, and the interior walls are whitewashed.
