Description
This is a mid to late 18th century agricultural complex on the island of Berneray, Isle of North Uist, with 19th century additions and possible earlier, 17th century, elements. The complex includes a barn, a separate byre, and a substantial retaining wall. It is associated with Norman Macleod and may have had a military or gunnery use at some point.
The barn is an 18th century, roughly rectangular building, originally two storeys and three bays in length. It originally had a thatched roof, now replaced with corrugated iron, and a lower thatched addition on the northwest gable. A tablet with a Latin inscription commemorating Norman Macleod is located above a door on the northeast wall. Above the tablet are three small window openings and a ventilation slit positioned below. The southwest elevation features one large window opening and two ventilation slits. The corrugated iron roof has deteriorated along the eaves, exposing the interior. The northwest gable section retains some marram grass thatch, revealing timber rafters. The gabled end wall has significant sections of missing thatch, exposing the turf underneath, and the roof is now secured with netting held by stones and string along the skews and wallhead.
The byre is a single-storey drystone rubble building, likely dating from the 19th century, set at an acute angle to the barn and originally thatched. It has gabled end walls, each with a single window opening, and a door in the southeast elevation. The roof has partially collapsed, revealing the driftwood-framed structure, remaining marram thatch, and turf underlay. Although the ridge has disappeared, the roof is now netted and weighted down with stones and bricks along the wallhead.
Inside the barn and byre, seen in 2014 and 2017, there are no visible fixtures or fittings, except for a detached timber door found within the barn addition.
A rubble structure in the shape of an 'L' extends from the west of the barn’s central door; this was formerly a porch.
A large drystone retaining wall runs along the southwest elevation, enclosing the complex and connecting the byre to the barn.
