St Michael's R.C. Church, Eriskay, South Uist

St Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Eriskay, South Uist, opened in May 1903. This plain Gothic apsidal church, which has an adjoining presbytery, is situated on a hill overlooking the village. It is constructed from coursed squared rubble with contrasting painted margins and long and short dressings. The south gable features a gallery window and windows flanking the cross in the apse, which have stylised plate tracery. Other windows are lancets, with single 2 or 3-light designs. At the south end of the east wall, there is a porch with a pointed doorway and a corbelled apex belfry topped with a cross finial. The church has a slate roof.

Inside, there is a triple-arched chancel screen with cusped framing above. The altar is uniquely supported on the bow of a boat, with a ship's lamp on a nearby column. A gallery is located to the south, featuring a balustraded front. A stone font in the porch may originate from an earlier building. The church is enclosed by a rubble-built wall, which is harled on the south and east sides. To the northeast, there is an iron bell on an iron frame, which is from the S.M.S. Derfflinger and was recovered from Scapa Flow.
