Description

472b South Lochboisdale is a single-storey, roughly rectangular-plan, Hebridean-type cottage likely dating to around the mid to later 19th century. The roof is thatched and the rubble walls of the cottage are limewashed and have rounded corners. The window openings are small and deeply recessed. The cottage is located in South Lochboisdale, towards the southeast of the Isle of South Uist. It is set back from the road which runs along the south side of Loch Boisdale and is accessible only by foot. The cottage was formerly the home of local Bard, Dòmhnall Aonghais Bhàin until 2000. It has been unoccupied since this date.

The principal northeast elevation is three bays wide with a central door flanked by windows. The cottage has two rectangular rubble-built chimneystacks on each end wall. The window to the right of the front door is a three-pane timber casement and the window to the left of the front door is a two-pane non-traditional replacement.

The roof is thatched in marram grass. Areas of the thatch roof on the southeast end and at the northwest corner have been lost and the roof timbers are exposed. There is netting still in place over the remaining thatch secured by ropes. Some weighting stones remain around the chimney stacks.

The interior has not been seen.
