Bayhead Lodge, Lews Castle, Stornoway, Lewis

Bayhead Lodge is a castellated gateway and lodges that are part of Lews Castle in Stornoway, Lewis, likely designed by Charles Wilson in the mid-19th century. The structure is built from rubble with ashlar dressings. The windows were boarded up in 1991 and were formerly casements. The main front facing the town is symmetrical and features a tall, square-plan gatehouse with buttresses. It has a high, pointed-arched carriage pend underneath and two-leaf gates of yett-type. On either side of the gatehouse are lower, single-bay lodges, each with arched bipartite windows and a parapet base that is also arched. There are parapetted low quadrant walls on either side. The treatment of the lodges is not identical on the rear elevation, which includes an entrance in a stone-roofed, full-width low outshot located on the left (north) side.
