Description

Probably designed by Charles Wilson, mid 19th century. Lodge to Lews Castle, with gateway and driveway bridge alongside. LODGE: altered and flat-roofed; probably more castellated originally than appears now. Rectangular plan, 2 bays x 1, corbels at deep fascia below eaves probably surmounted originally by crenellations, like the survivors over the taller diagonally-set turret on west flank to roadside; flat-roofed circular turret at SE angle was probably similar, too. Rubble-built, squared dressings, painted lintels, modern glazing. Original main door on narrow end wall facing driveway now a window; existing porch on east flank unlikely to be original.

GATEWAY: Convex-curved low quadrants with stone terminal piers where polocies dyke adjoins, quadrants topped by spiked cast-iron railings, gates to similar pattern, cast-iron gatepiers are polygonal on plan, hollow, and with castellated tops.

BRIDGE: Single segmental arch, rubble built, including crenellated rustic parapet, rock-faced squared stonework to voussoirs and shallow-battered abutments.
