Description
The Masonic Hall, located at 55-57 Kenneth Street in Stornoway, Lewis, dates from the earlier to mid-19th century and is designed in a late Georgian style. This two-storey building has an unusually deep plan and features an unwindowed north side, with a modern addition on the south side. The front façade is flat and made of painted ashlar, exhibiting a symmetrical design with five bays, a central door, and a first-floor cill band. The first-floor windows are taller and consist of sash windows with 6-pane glazing, featuring two-pane upper sashes and four-pane lower sashes, along with original panelled shutters inside. The modern addition has two bays, is harled, but maintains similar proportions and glazing to the original structure. The roof is piended slate, likely with a flat platform as well, and there are two stacks set cross-ways towards the rear, which may sit atop a spinal cross-wall.
The three-bay rear elevation has been altered, now featuring a projecting central stair and lift shaft, along with a low link to the modern addition. The right-hand bay remains unaltered, with a margined window at each level, both of which are multi-paned (16-pane) sash and case windows. The boundary wall has been breached to allow car access to a rear car park, but where it still stands, it retains original cast-iron railings. The overthrow arch is noted as unique in the Outer Isles.
